A moment of clarity and revelation? Do Scout and Bigfoot have more in common than they originally thought? It’s possible. We don’t really know much about Bigfoot, but we’re slowly finding out more and more. What we are sure of is that these two lost souls will have to depend on each other for a little while longer.

I stumbled across a nice Bigfoot blast-from-the-past a few days ago. Apparently, back in the 1970s, you could purchase a pair of K-Tel Bigfoot Snowshoes to strap on your feet and walk around in. Then, whenever a grown-up spotted those abnormally large footprints in their yard, the authorities would be alerted and an all-out search for Bigfoot would ensue. Hilarious fun! I wonder how many Bigfoot sightings in the 1970s were started by some smart-alec kids with too much time on their hands.
K-Tel Bigfoot Snowshoes
Here’s the television commercial for the Bigfoot Snowshoes. If I had these, I’d be leaving giant footprints all over my neighbor’s yard. If anyone feels like buying me a pair or wreaking some cryptozoological havoc of their own, why here’s a set I found on Ebay.

Thanks for stopping by. I’d love to hear what you think of the comic. Just remember, Untold Tales of Bigfoot is for grown-ups and kids. So let’s keep the comments appropriate.

Missed one? What’s that all about? Guess Bigfoot remembers the lesson The Naturalist taught him about traps. And Scout’s so jumpy I’m surprised they didn’t blunder right into that trap. Are they actually close to the end of their quest? Better tread carefully, no matter what.

No fan art this week (wha?!) but here’s some useful info for those interested in keeping track of sasquatch. The BFRO (Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization) offers this comprehensive database of credible Bigfoot sightings in the United States and Canada. With this much credible evidence, he’s just got to exist!

And though I don’t endorse (nor receive juicy kickbacks from) the following companies, I can’t help sharing some fun Bigfoot stuff I recently stumbled across:

Thanks to all the new subscribers to the email notifications. I think when we hit 100 subscribers I’ll have another giveaway. And thanks to my Twitter followers and Facebook users who have been hyping the comic. I appreciate the support. See you all next week! -v

Aaah, fudgepops! Wolves?! And we did so well sneaking by those bears! Looks like Scout’s gaining confidence in Bigfoot, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Bigfoot’s itching to get into a scrap with two savage wolves. And right about now I’m guessing that squirrel’s starting to rethink his decision to join the group. Guess we’ll see what happens next week.

This past weekend, I left my cave and ventured out to the New York Comic Con. I had a blast there, but the best part was staying with an old friend who lives near the coast. My first night there he utterly ambushed me with an unexpected gift — a congratulations for UTOB having won a Reuben. Sentimental goon. He’s really good at choosing gifts, though, and this one was no exception.

This is a one-of-a-kind, sterling silver keychain my friend had made for me, hand-crafted in the likeness of my Bigfoot character. The photos don’t do it justice, but it’s based on Bigfoot’s pose in the first panel on page 8 of Crossing Paths.

UTOBigfoot keychain
The detail on this is amazing. Bigfoot’s got all his fingers and toes, textured fur, a belly-button and that sweet smile on his face. I was just about speechless when my friend gave it to me. I should’ve punched him for making me feel so awkward, but I think I mumbled something like, “friend…good…” and then gave him some loganberries. I’ll have to find a safe spot for this very special gift.

Well, that wraps it up for this week. Hello again to all the cartoonists I finally got to meet in person at NYCC, I hope you had a great weekend. And, as usual, a huge thanks to everybody who comes back every week to read/like/share the comic. Your support is incalculable. -v

Yes. Very peaceful. Surely nothing will disturb that peace in the foreseeable fut—oh dang. The Naturalist has apparently spotted some trouble. But when you consider Bigfoot’s strength and agility, how much trouble could it really be? I mean, he can lift a good-sized boulder, for pete’s sake!

Bigfoot can also lift a medium-sized Naturalist pretty easily. And while loyal readers of UTOB are aware that events in Bigfoot’s past eventually echo through present day, I’ll post this image for those who might have missed the nod. UTOB Past vs. Present
Also, I know the holidays are coming up. If anyone’s looking for something elegant to wear to a fancy Christmas party, you couldn’t go wrong with this beautiful Bigfoot Christmas sweater. Sure it’s hideous and it fits like a glove (if you wore your gloves on your feet) but hey…bigfoot! -v

Way I figure it, maybe six people will read this comic today — what with the holiday and all. Still, you lucky six get a little glimpse of the new visitors to Bigfoot’s neck of the woods. The Naturalist is hoping they’re the reasonable type. They look reasonable to you?

Hey, here’s another bit of Bigfoot ephemera a friend sent me. A Bigfoot air freshener. Will it make your car smell like Bigfoot? Soon as I get a car I’ll let you know.Bigfoot Air Freshener
Finally, if you read today’s episode and got the feeling the Naturalist was covering some vaguely familiar ground — nice job, eagle eye. Since a few of you, over time, have mentioned the classic “Secret of Bigfoot” episode of The Six Million Dollar Man in the comments, I thought I’d give a gentle nod to the show in panel three.UTOB page 073 comparison with Six Million Dollar Man
If you’ve never seen the episode (all over YouTube, btw), the scene I’m aping shows the tense, eerie moments right before Steve Austin (Lee Majors) encounters a very scary Bigfoot (Andre the Giant). It’d be nice if the Bionic Man would accompany The Naturalist when he confronts those hunters, but it looks like Michael’s on his own. Let’s hope for the best. Happy Holidays and Merry Bigfoot everyone! -v

Of course! What else is an unarmed, senior citizen supposed to do against a gang of gun-toting scofflaws? Why, use nature as a weapon, that’s what! Tune in for my new series, The Naturalist! Watch as he battles crime using the environment! (No. Just…no) Anyway, I guess we’ll see how this turns out next week.

Someone sent me this link to a possible Bigfoot sighting in Saskatchewan. If you enjoy grainy video of hairy bipeds largely obscured by flora, feel free to take a look and form an opinion.

Finally, I’m part of a small group of other comic creators online who suggest drawing challenges for fun every week. With the recent success of the new LEGO movie, this week’s challenge was “LEGO.” Most people were drawing their own comic characters as LEGO mini-figures, so I figured I’d follow suit. No, these are not available in stores, but I can dream, can’t I?-v

Trees that eat people up and spit ‘em out…lost dogs that appear when you least expect them…there is something seriously weird going on here. But it looks like the Ranger has it all covered. And if he needs help, it looks like Dad’s ready to throw down again. Never before in my life have I been this happy to see a gathering of authority figures.

And Bigfoot? He’s still lurking about, just taking it all in and sharing a knowing look with Scout. What’s his next move? Well, if we’re to believe the photo below, it looks like he’ll be hanging out with a bloodthirsty pirate!

run red run felts of Bigfoot and Scout
Those fuzzy friends are, of course, the fantastic Bigfoot and Scout needle felted dolls that I commissioned from Michelle at runredrun. A local library’s featuring a nice display of her Halloween/monster-themed fiber sculptures this month, so I lent her Bigfoot and Scout to class up the joint. You can see a few photos of the exhibit at runredrun.com.

Now here’s something that has nothing to do with Bigfoot but everything to do with me drawing like a beast. Every October, artists all over the world take the InkTober drawing challenge by creating one ink drawing a day the entire month. Most of them do it old-school, with actual ink on actual paper. Normally, I ink and color Bigfoot digitally, but I try to take part in Inktober to brush up on my natural media inking skills. Since it takes me little longer to work that way (because Bristol Board doesn’t come with an undo keystroke) my participation in past years has been spotty at best.

Well, this year that all changes. Because this year I’m utilizing Inktober as a springboard to a whole new experiment! Yes, I’ll be drawing in ink on paper, but all of my drawings will be part of a continuing Page-A-Day-Story that will run every day of October and finish up on Halloween! I got a jump on things so I wouldn’t fall behind and started sketching and inking already. And since it’s October first, here’s page one of Wish On A Halloween Moon.

Wish On A Halloween Moon, page 001I won’t be posting that image on Twitter until later today, so you guys get a sneak peek. So, have I gone ’round the bend? Can I ink up a page of story every day in October? Who knows? But I’m going to try. Oh, it may not be great literature or fine art, but I think it’ll be fun. If you want to read the story, I’ll be posting all of my drawings daily, in order, at my Twitter account, under the hashtags #Inktober #PageADayStory and #WishOnAHalloweenMoon. I hope you follow along! -v

Well, there you go. No savage mountain lions or bloodthirsty wolf packs for Bigfoot and Scout this time. Just one jumpy skunk.

It’s been a while since the drawing board’s been clear enough for me to work with Bigfoot & Scout, but it felt great. Like coming home again. I wanted to ink and letter the comic in MangaStudio, something I’d never done before. The inking went alright, but MangaStudio‘s lettering engine is just too klunky and I ended up re-doing the word balloons in Illustrator. Sooner or later I’ll streamline this process. I did have a lot of fun with the sneeze panel. I shy away from drawing stuff that might lean toward “gross”, but sound effects are fair game. I just let the readers’ imagination do all the heavy lifting.

Hey Elvis, What’s with the pompadour?

This comic was inspired by a doodle in my sketch book where Bigfoot is Elvis and Scout is a money-hungry Colonel Tom Parker. Bigfoot looks so great in that pompadour I had to find a way to put it in a comic (plus, the word pompadour is just funny). Here’s the sketch.

Bigfoot as Elvis, Scout as Col. Tom Parker

Publishing

Over the last year, I’ve had months-long email exchanges with at least three different publishers who showed a lot of interest in UTOB, loved the story and art in UTOB…and then chose not to publish UTOB.  As Scout would say, “Fudgepops!” No visionary publishers or animation studios have appeared on the horizon wanting to make a bazillion dollars with me, and I think Bigfoot and Scout are tired of waiting. So I’ll probably be taking things into my own hands by running a crowd-funding campaign in the new year to get Untold Tales of Bigfoot: Book One printed. Watch this space (or the UTOB Facebook Page) for all the news on that. Your support, as always, will be invaluable.

Some New UTOB Merchandise!

Since it’s the holiday gift-giving season, I should let you know there are a couple new shirts in my Zazzle Shop. There’s the brand new “One Good Friend” design (with both dark & light colored shirt options) and a revamp of the “Wave” design that’ll work on most colors, dark or light. The old designs only worked on black or white shirts, but I thought it was about time we added some color to the place.

And, of course, Blokko is still offering the ultra-cool, highly-collectible 3D-printed Bigfoot figure! This is one of my favorite things to come out of working on this comic. This genial giant represents all the best parts of us — friendship, peace, loyalty. A nice gift for a good friend. And, if I’m not mistaken, there’s still a 10% discount with the code FORSCOUT. Just head over to Blokko to pick one up.

Bigfoot 3D figure from Blokko and Vince DorseOh, one last thing. For those of you who missed it on the Facebook or Twitter feeds, here’s the “Happy Thursday” greeting I posted this past Thanksgiving. I hope you all had a great Thursday. Until next time, enjoy the holiday season. -v

UTOB Pre-Kickstarter Update!

<<First   |  <Previous  |   Next>

Hey folks! I’ve been crazy busy for a while drawing, writing, and getting ready for it…and now it’s almost here. Untold Tales of Bigfoot will be running a Kickstarter campaign to get Book One: Crossing Paths in print! And we’re gonna need your help to make that happen. Bigfoot A bunch of you have asked for the comic in printed book form, and I’d love to be able to offer that. If we meet our funding goal,  we can finally make that a reality! Barring any oddball, last-minute glitches, we’ll start the Kickstarter campaign next week, and we’ll need all the support you can give. What can you expect? Well, more than just the comic you’ve read online:

New Art! New Pages! New Characters!

I’ve gone back over all the pages in the first story so I could clean it up a bit — mostly visual continuity. Lemme show you what I mean. If you’ve read the comic, you’re probably familiar with these two panels from the very first page.Bigfoot You’ve seen them dozens of times, right? Well…sort of. The fact is, when those panels first went live, I’d just started drawing Bigfoot. So his design hadn’t yet coalesced into the friendly cryptid you know and love. In fact, when they first went up, those two panels looked like this:Bigfoot Yikes! No wonder he didn’t have any friends! Anyway, I’ve spent some time going over those old pages and making Bigfoot look like Bigfoot. Same with Scout and the rest of the gang. But that’s not all I’ve been doing.

I also added about 10 pages (!) to the book. Stuff that helps flesh out the story a bit and tie up some loose ends. Some of your old favorites (a certain squirrel I could mention) get a little more page-time now. And I even managed to find a spot for a new character.Untold Tales of Bigfoot page 001Margie, another Forest Ranger, plays a small, fun role in this story, and since I have plans for her in Book Two I thought this would be the perfect way to introduce her.

Fun Merchandise!

The main goal of the Kickstarter will be getting the book into print, but I’ll also be offering some fun Untold Tales of Bigfoot Merchandise that you can’t get anywhere else!BigfootWe’re gonna have bookmarks, stickers, buttons, prints and other UTOB stuff that backers will get if we hit our goals. There’s even a plan to put backers right in the woods with Bigfoot and Scout, as well as some other ideas for stretch goals we’re tossing around. You’ll have to wait for the Kickstarter to launch before I give you those details — I’m shooting for Tuesday, May 24th and there will be some early-bird specials for a few lucky people who jump right in. I’ll post again on the day it goes live so you can be among the first supporters.

Until then, please mention the upcoming UTOB Kickstarter to anyone who might be interested. Like I said, we’ll need all the support we can get. And to tide you over, here’s a sneak peek of the cover art I’m working on.Untold Tales of Bigfoot page 001

Final Week for the Kickstarter!

We’ve Hit Our Initial Goal! Now Let’s Hit The Stretch!

For those who missed it, The Untold Tales of Bigfoot Kickstarter has hit its initial goal! Huge thanks to everyone for supporting and sharing the campaign.
Now we have roughly a week left to hit the first stretch goal. If we get to $9,000, everyone who bought a physical book gets upgraded to the Deluxe Edition with the more elaborate ‘french fold’ cover that feels more substantial and allows for a little more content, an introduction by award-winning author Matthew Cody (Supers of Nobles Green Trilogy and more), and an afterword by yours truly where I’ll talk about the origins of Untold Tales of Bigfoot.

StretchGoal9000
So keep sharing with your friends, family and followers. That Deluxe Edition is within reach!
And hitting $9,000 doesn’t have to be difficult. For instance, we’ve had 15 backers pledge the “Cave Drawings” Reward Tier for $100 so far. Just nine more backers at that tier and we’ve hit our stretch goal. Or 16 more at the $55 “Naturalist” Tier. Plenty of ways we can do it, we’ll just need to reach out to those people who haven’t joined us and let them know about the project.

Commissions Can Be Great Gifts!

A good thing to remember is that the Naturalist, Cave Drawings, and Polaroid Picture Rewards offer you a chance to get all kinds of custom art. And you don’t have to keep it all for yourself. Some backers have asked about getting their spouse or pet in the “Bigfoot & Me” digital file. Of course! There’s all kinds of ways you can spread the joy around with these upper reward tiers. For instance…

UpperTier_GiftIdeas

I’d love to get all the book backers that Deluxe Edition. So please, visit the Kickstarter, and keep sharing the project with friends who might enjoy it. And don’t forget to consider increasing your reward if you think it might help you finish up some of your gift shopping. I certainly don’t mind helping out with that! Thanks everyone. -v

<<First   |  <Previous |   Next>

Finally! Proof of Bigfoot!

Hey folks! We finished up our successful Kickstarter just a couple months ago, so I thought I’d keep you updated on where we are on the book.

To begin with, the proofs were shipped from China recently.

Proofs01

PrintNinja lets you choose 8 pages to have printed and sent so you can see how the art looks on actual paper, check colors, eye up the registration, etc. By the way, for anyone interested in making comics, the option of having the printed proof sent to you (rather than opting for just an online visual) runs about $250 (with this particular print vendor). So make sure you account for things like that if you’re running a crowdfunding campaign. And yeah, I did. Thank goodness. (Bigfoot & Scout figures by @runredrunfelts)

Proofs02

Bigfoot, Scout, and I took a close-up look at the pages and gave ‘em the thumbs up. Officially, they started printing the books last week. Woo-hoo! Once the books are printed and bound, they’ll be loaded onto a freighter in China where they’ll begin their journey to my studio. So now we play the waiting game.

Additional Rewards

The waiting game, by the way, involves ordering and prepping all the other merchandise from various vendors. As you can see, the postman dropped off a box of buttons at the cave the other day. Sweet Baby Corn! These will be part of the 3-button set.

SweetBabyCornButtons

I’ve also received some of the stickers that go out with some rewards. Here’s Bigfoot showing ‘em off.

FriendOfBigfootStickers_Hand

Commissions

And, of course, I’m still rolling through the commissions that backers at the Cave Drawings & Polaroid Picture tiers requested. Happy to see a few requests for Bigfoot or Scout drawings. It’s always just a little more fun drawing your own characters. But, as you can see, I’m having a blast drawing all kinds of stuff for the backers.

commissions_sofar

So that’s where we are right now. Books are in the production stage, as are the pins, stickers, and commissions. With any luck, things will stay on track and turn out great. I’ll keep you posted, of course. Thanks. -v

Hey Folks! Quick update for those of you who aren’t getting the Kickstarter updates.

We’re still waiting for the books to arrive (they’re on a long, slow trip from China) but in the meantime, other merchandise is continuing to roll in. The embroidered patches have arrived:utob_patch

And we’ve begun putting together the button sets:

utob_buttons

All of the stickers have arrived as well:

utob_onegoodfriendstickers

Like I said, just waiting on the books. Of course, once the books get here, I’ll still have a ton of signing and sketching to do inside them before I can ship them out. But what else have I got to do?

Something else I’ve got to do

I am taking a quick spin by New York Comic Con to hang out with the folks at the National Cartoonists Society (Booth #2058). If you’re going to be at NYCC, stop by on Friday, October 7th, from 1-4 pm and say hi. I’ll be drawing Bigfoot sketches and offering some of this fun Untold Tales of Bigfoot merchandise.

utob_merchandisedisplay

Nice display, right? That was actually created for me by a friend (and Bigfoot enthusiast) who works with reclaimed wood and all-natural, non-toxic stains. You can find his Etsy shop here.

That’s all for now. Still working on Kickstarter commissions while waiting for the books. I’ll let you know as soon as they arrive. In the meantime, if you didn’t get a chance to jump in on the Kickstarter, I’ve dropped a link in my shop where you can pre-order the book. Thanks for stopping by. -v

Here’s a nice Halloween surprise…

boximage01

The giant palette of boxes in the street can mean only one thing. The Untold Tales of Bigfoot books have arrived. Huzzah!

boximage05

My cat’s already scribbling out the blueprints for the giant box fortress I’ll be strong-armed into building for her. “And line each box with a blanket!” she tells me with her eyes, “The weather’s getting colder!”

boximage06

So, the books are here, but there’s still some work to do to get them to my Kickstarter backers — I’ll be signing and doodling in a bunch of these for weeks to come. And I gotta send out the Kickstarter survey to confirm all the backers’ addresses.

For anyone else who wants one, you can order one from my online shop. With luck, I’ll be able to get everybody their stuff before Christmas.

But let’s not rush Christmas. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mark today’s holiday with a little cartoon. Here’s something I pulled out of an old LIFE Magazine from 1956. Have a Happy Halloween everyone. Hope you get lots of treats! -v

When you’re a vegetarian like Bigfoot, the entire forest is your buffet table.

Hey everybody! Hope 2017’s treating you okay. Din-Din, the one-page short above, is something I put together for PIX, Pittsburgh’s Indie Comics Expo, which takes place on Sunday, April 9th, at the August Wilson Center downtown. I’ll be there with some of my cartoonist pals at the National Cartoonist Society Table. If you happen to be in Pittsburgh this Sunday, please stop in and say hi. The admission’s free (and so is street parking that day)!

PIX_printedcomic

The comic itself appears in the PIX program (as you can see above) and, technically, will be the only other Untold Tales of Bigfoot comic in print besides the graphic novel (that some of you helped me Kickstart, thank you again). And Din-Din is printed on good old-fashioned newsprint, so it’ll look, feel, and even smell like one of those retro kids comics that were part of my inspiration for UTOB. But that’s not all I’ll have at PIX…

UTOB_WOAHM_Displays_Dorse

Of course, I’ll be bringing a few copies of Untold Tales of Bigfoot in case anybody wants a copy. And, because I constantly have monsters on the brain, I’ll also be premiering my 40-page, b/w Halloween story, Wish On A Halloween Moon. It started as an art project and ended up as a storybook that you can color. So, art book, storybook, coloring book. You can read more about it here. But I should point out one small detail for fans of Untold Tales of Bigfoot: In one 2-page spread, where a few cryptids come thundering down a hillside, you may spot a very familiar-looking, four-fingered friend.

HalloweenMoon_proofspread_Dorse

He also shows up as one of three signed, color prints I’ll have on hand. Did I mention I’m a fan of monsters?

WOAHM_3Prints_surface

But, of course, aside from all of that, I am still working on the “Me & Bigfoot” caricatures. There’s a lot of them! But whenever I get a chance, I knock another one off the list. And if this rapid-fire gif below works properly, you’ll see a few of the ‘night’ images I’ve worked on recently.
